Once you’ve decided to attend a gym on a regular basis you may be wondering how to choose a health club that will be right for you. There are several things to be considered, but, first of all, I want to stress that the health club you choose should fit your goals, otherwise you’ll give it up pretty soon. So make sure that your work out program is motivating enough and that you’d feel comfortable there.

Location/Neighborhood
A long trip to your health club may be even more exhausting than working out. Nobody likes the idea of spending the whole evening battling heavy traffic. An hour here, half an hour there may turn your evenings into endless driving. Obviously, it is better to join a gym that is not far from home. You can also choose a health club where you would drive by on your way to work and back, so that you are regularly reminded that you should be making your stops to work out.

Membership Fees
When looking for a suitable health club, beware of making hasty decisions. Before joining a club, make sure you have compared membership fees of various health centers, because they may differ greatly. In general, your fee will depend on the duration of your membership: the longer your membership, the lower the fee. The majority of health clubs will try to commit you for the longest period possible. So if you don’t plan to stay with the club for long, before signing a contract, make sure that the pricing suits you. It is sometimes better to put back you joining the club until late in the summer or New Year when the majority of health centers offer discounts. But don’t delay for too long, because you can lose your motivation by then. And remember, you are not looking for the lowest fee, but for the health club that suits you best.

Membership Demographic
This is another thing to be considered. Some people prefer attending groups of the same sex. Still, a unisex health club is a great place to meet people of the opposite sex. So spend some time on checking whether it is the right club for you.

Extras/Additional Service
It is important to find out whether the health club offers extra services if they cost more. Among the extras, you should inquire about are daycare service, physiotherapy facilities, nutritionist’s advice, etc.

Operating Hours/Working Hours
Another extremely important thing you should find out about is whether the fitness center is open at the time of day when you plan to work out. Many people prefer doing their working out early in the morning, others like working out after work, so depending on your preferences, make sure that your fitness club operates at hours that suit you. A lot of people like working out on public holidays, so you should inquire about the fitness club’s policy regarding holidays open hours.

Personal Training Options/Qualified Staff
A personal trainer is one more option to be considered if you want to keep yourself in perfect shape. Even though your existing training program may seem good enough, it will apparently undergo some changes as your skills develop. So, qualified staff with good knowledge of training techniques is another thing you should look out for. Don’t forget to check whether the trainers available at the health club are really qualified, because many fitness
centers do not pay much attention to the qualification of the staff they hire.

Group Classes
Another point to be mentioned is group activity. Sooner or later you may get tired of the monotony of working out. Joining a fitness class will help you regain your motivation. A variety of group fitness classes provided by the health club nowadays is reason enough to wonder if these are included in the club’s fees. Before signing a contract, find out whether the fees for group activities are part of the membership or are additional.

Hygiene
One more thing that you should not forget to find out about is whether the fitness club maintains hygiene standards. Spend time on visiting it yourself to check if the equipment, bathrooms, and changing rooms are kept clean and there are enough towels and spray bottles to use on the equipment.

Equipment
Find out about the variety of the equipment as well as its quality to suit your own fitness program. If you like to work with weights make sure there are enough of them even if there are a lot of people. One more thing to be taken into account is the number of working machines. If you don’t want to come to your gym and find all the machines occupied look out for health clubs where you can reserve equipment for certain hours. Though nowadays most of health clubs offer this option, still it’s better to double-check.

Cancellation Policy
If you sign a long term contract you’d better enquire about the health center’s cancellation policy. It is not that you will drop out because you are lazy, there may be other reasons, for example, moving to a different place. So, don’t forget to enquire if they offer refunds or a transfer of your membership.

I hope that this guideline will help you to choose a health club that fits you perfectly. Still, keep in mind that all these points are equally important! So do not leave off any of them, otherwise you may end up abandoning your personal fitness program feeling stressed out and disappointed.
